花樣年華 is a Chinese idiom that describes a beautiful and blossoming period of time in life that is synonymous to a flower; which is fleeting and ephemeral, and where it fades as quickly as it blooms. 花means flower, 樣means ‘like’, 年 means year and 華 means flower again and a period of time. Often the expression is often used with an underlying nostalgic and melancholic tone.
Often an identity of a person is constructed through their interpretation of their own memory. Upon reflection of 花樣年華 there becomes a sentimental yearning for an reality that is not genuine. Therefore, ‘22 excerpts of falsified memories’ is a collective of ‘false’ (a reality that may be untrue due to its subjective view) memories. Through narratives and illustration, ‘花樣年華’ aims to physically manifest memories and the perception of self, and to create an empathy between the artist and the audience beyond a barrier of language.
